Khmelnytskyi

Our city is situated on the banks of the Southern Buh river. 

Our city is old, it is 586 years old. The city appeared at the crossing of busy trade routs in the place where the river Ploska flows into the Southern Buh. In those far days it was a wooden fortress  surrounded by the moat of water, where a garrison of about 100 soldiers served. Their task was to warn the nearest fortresses of Medzhybizh and Kamianets- Podilskyi about coming enemies. 

    Soon people began to settle around the fortress as the life there was safer. By and by more people came and the settlement grew bigger and bigger. Now it was a small town.

     The first name of the town was Ploskyriv. It got the name from the river Ploska and the moat ( riv ) Then it was named Proskuriv and in 1954 our town was named Khmelnytskyi in honour of a great Ukrainian hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.

    Now Khmelnytskyi is a big city with the population of about 260.000 people.

    The city is a big industrial, cultural, educational, trade and transport centre. There many plants and factories which produce different goods such as transformer substations, thermoplastic automatic machines, TV sets, different tools , agricultural machines, furniture, clothes and many more.

      Our city is also a famous cultural centre with three theatres, four cinemas, some museums , a picture gallery. There are also many houses of culture, libraries and monuments. A very famous monument to Bohdan Khmelnytskyi meets the visitors at the railway station. People of our city and its guests like the Music -and- Drama theatre after Starytskyi where they can see interesting performances and plays. Children like our puppet show which is one of the best in Ukraine.

     As an educational centre Khmelnytskyi can boast its universities, institutes, academies and colleges. People all over the country know our Technological University, the Academy of Frontier Troops, the Humanitarian Academy and the University of Management and Law. They are ones of the best in our country.

    And of course, our city is beautiful with its green parks, squares and streets. The biggest and the most beautiful park is situated on the bank of the river. It's a favourite place to rest of our people. Here they can walk, sit on the benches watching different birds and animals in the mini zoo, go boating along the river and have a snack in the numerous cafes.

     So, people of our city love and are proud of this wonderful place.
